Gotobed(以下Senator)は,好奇心旺盛で見るもの聞くもの全てについて,愚直なまでに正直なコメントをし,しばしば周りの者を苛立たせる。その様子は読者の笑いを誘うが,小説中の彼の役割はそういった喜劇的なものにとどまらない。たとえばSenatorは,国教会や陸軍,選挙区等,イギリスの諸制度に潜む不平等や矛盾を指摘するが,実際彼の見方は間題の核心をつくものが多い。また,彼はイギリス社会の腐敗を階級の問題と結びつけ,貴族の金権支配や上流階級に蔓延るマテリアリズムなどを,痛烈に批判する。Trollopeは究極的には,Senatorの示唆するようなイギリスの社会構造の変革までは考えていないようだが,その内部にある(上に言及したような)様々な間題についてはしばしば,このキャラクターの声を借りて自分の見解を主張している。この小説が出版された当時はSenatorの辛辣なイギリス批判に反感を抱く批評家も多く,評判は概して芳しくなかった。しかし,この小説を今後のイギリスのあるべき姿を探った'condition-of-England' novelとして捉えると,Senatorこそがその要となる人物であることがわかる。Senatorは外国人訪問者という立場から,イギリスの「常識」を外から眺め,(イギリス人自身が気づかない,或いは認めたくない)その非合理性を暴いてみせる。小説の後半,Senatorの講演は中断され,彼は再び'New World'に戻るが,彼の残したメッセージは,ヒロインMary Mastersの幸せな結婚といったコンヴェンショナルなエンディングに完全にかき消されることなく,その余韻を残している。The American
