Courtship of Susan Bell\"における「家庭の天使」のようなヒロインやHe Knew He Was Right やThe Duke's Childrenにおける美しく、才気溢れるアメリカ東部出身の女性たち、戦闘的なフェミニスト、美しくも危険な「堕ちた女」など、そのタイプは様々である。そして、それぞれのキャラクターの描写には、トロロープの憧れや疑問、嫌悪、同情など、複雑な思いの反映が認められるのである。そうした背景には、特に、トロロープの1860年代における二つの経験-すなわち、生涯友情を育むことになるアメリカ人女性、ケイト・フィールドとの出会いと1861年9月から62年の3月に亘る二度目のアメリカ滞在一の微妙な影響があると考えられる。たとえば、トロロープは、ケイトのフェミニズム思想に反対しながらも、彼女の知的な魅力に強く惹かれていた。また、旅行記North Americaの記述にも見られるように、彼はアメリカの文化に反発を覚えながらも、自国の価値観を基準としてこの「新世界」を評価すまいという、寛容で柔軟な姿勢を取っていた。そうしたトロロープの「アメリカ」に対するアンビヴァレントな態度、また、翻って、イギリスの伝統的な価値観をあらためて問い直そうとする姿勢は、特にThe Way We Live
