However, Bruce Johnson, in his article“Conrad’s ‘Karain’ and Lord Jim” （1963）, states that “there are many details in the story designed to bring Karain and the Englishmen together in the same illusion-haunted predicament.”\\nThis paper examines the illusion of friendship between Karain and Pata Matara and the illusion of friendship between the unnamed English frame narrator and Karain in relation to phantoms, and argues that “Karain: A Memory” can be read as a study of how emotional vulnerability leads to betrayal of friendship.
