内容記述 Interviews were held with 192 mothers whose children are fifth to ninth graders in order to investigate the actual conditions of their utilization of juku schools. The results were as follows. There has been a steady increase in the number of mothers who try to establish new educational environments for their children independent of their regular school education. Many mothers try to make their sons and daughters study harder by sending them to juku schools which harmonize with their educational philosophy, because children usually get out of their parents' control when they become maturer and more independent. Many of the mothers hope their children will study at good juku schools for the purpose of forming character, but when they select juku schools, their level of aspiration is very low because of the difficulties in judging the quality of each juku school in advance. There are many juku schools which pursue only profit at the sacrifice of the educational quality, but 73.4% of the mothers are satisfied with the teaching methods of the juku schools their children attend. Mothers who are very concerned about education, however, are not so satisfied with their juku schools even after they have carefully examined and selected them. Some mothers allow their children to pick juku schools their playmates attend. In most cases, those mothers are not so concerned about education, and are satisfied with the juku schools if their children are willing to go to them. A little over twenty percent of mothers expect juku schools to be institutions for forcing training for good marks or cramming for entrance examinations. But the juku schools do not always meet their expectations, and cause most dissatisfaction among the mothers who only expect their children's marks to improve rapidly. 42.7% of juku schools are of the exercise- and answer-checking type, where teachers only make students fill in exercise books and tell the correct answers to them afterwards instead of teaching the subjects systematically. It can be inferred that this is not done because it is an effective teaching procedure, but it helps cut down on personnel expenditures. Much dissatisfaction is produced by the mothers who send their children to such exercise- and answer-checking type juku schools. In conclusion, it is certain that there is a trend among mothers forward establishing new educational environments independent of regular schools, but the intention seems to be far from realization at present.
